Chris's Story

Life Chris here - Well - here is the scoop on me... Basically after high school I went to BC for a couple of years and decided it bored me. I could not handle being spoon-fed how wonderful the teachers were and how I should spend my money buying their book they just had published, how they were right and how no one else's opinion mattered. Even in so-called electives such as Drama and Choir how nothing was more important than that particular class the teacher was enraptured with.. how it was my civic duty to be sell my soul to their beliefs as well.. however my soul was not for sale. I dropped out; decided to find my own way. I spent my first year finding GOD, and then spent the next two years being persecuted by my "friends" for not being a sheep and believing in relationship NOT religion. I formed an alternative band in 90-92; lead vocalist; played the Whiskey in LA 3x and the Roxy in LA 2x. I then ended up marrying the drummer’s girlfriend which in a roundabout way ended the band. We tried to get it back together after that numerous times over the years, but no magic sparked like the first go-around. My wife Angela and I got married in 1992. I thought it proper to start looking for a real job at that point since I was going to be a husband.. and lets face it those who knew me knew I had trouble staying in relationships very long.. if at all, so if I was going to do it I was going to do it right. I went to school to be an electronics technician. After graduation I could not find anyone to hire me so I got odd jobs in Bakersfield and then in Las Vegas where we eventually moved. After being in Vegas for 2 years we moved back to Bako and I landed a job at Lightspeed Net - local internet provider. I worked there for...Expand for more
5 years and moved from Tech Support to a Unix Administrator. After 5 years Lightspeed was bought by Onemain.Com then Earthlink.. I did not feel like being a number plus I got a better offer elsewhere and moved on to build my own ISP at our sister company ACN Communications. ACN in seeing how Lightspeed made its money going IPO decided to plan its own public offering in 2000 when the tech stocks fell off the planet. I was in the process of going to Denver corporate office head IT Engineer when all of corporate was let go. I was the first promised to be brought back but I told them to kiss my ass. My wife and I waited 7 years to have our fist kid - a boy, and the year after we had a surprise girl in 2000. Then we were out of a job. We decided to move back to Vegas. I then took a job making 20,000.00 less than what I made in Bako and essentially was doing the same job, went through another string of layoffs and then I got feed up with it. I decided to start my own business.. I am now an independent computer consultant outside of Las Vegas, I work less and get paid more. I do work between Vegas and Death Valley and just opened a small shop doing repair, service, and sales. We just had a third addition to the family (another girl) and I am still happily married to my wife of going on 15 years (in July). I still think teachers are full of themselves, stupid people shouldn't breathe, you do not have to go to school to make a 3 figure income, and you should never listen to anything but your own heart and soul and follow their urgings to death, glory, misery, or wherever else they may take you. That way when you look back you can see the seeds you reaped not the flowerboxes you tended for others. Chris Payne - Class of 1988
